Positive states of mind such as hope, optimism, and sense of personal control have been shown to exert a protective influence upon both physical and mental health. In short, a good attitude is directly linked to good health.
In early 2010, the results of a 10-year study conducted by researchers at Columbia University were published that suggested positive emotions may protect against heart disease. In another, earlier, study that was conducted at the Universtiy of Texas, researchers discovered that individuals with an upbeat view of life were much less likely to become frail as they aged.
Furthermore, more and more studies are finding that there appears to be a connection between positive emotions and susceptibility for illness. A study undertaken at the University of Wisconson showed that negative emotions weakened the body's immune system whereas author David B. Beaton of the Rochester Institute of Technology has written that there is evidence for the correlation between positive attitude and the ability of the immunse system to fight disease.
